Coach Responsibilities

All coaches should read and understand the material in the US Soccer E Candidate Manual. More advanced materials are available in the US Soccer D Candidate Manual.

Coaches are encouraged to earn their coaching certificates through the IYSA Education Department.

Coaching

Every team needs a coach. Not every parent has the time or abilities to be one. Soccer experience is not necessary to coach, we have training, mentoring, and help if you can fulfill this very important roll. Starting in Fall 2011, all coaches will be required to have training.

If you are a new coach, here are a few starting points:

  • Remember the most important thing is that SOCCER IS FUN
  • Remember the second most important thing is that SOCCER IS FUN
  • Attend our coaching seminars with IYSA Director of Coaching, Steve Adler
  • Director of Coaching, Wayne Swendsen is available to assist you at your practices
  • Read the E and D coaching manuals (links at left)
  • We have activitiy cards and other instructional materials to supplement your practices (just ask)
  • Attend a referee certification clinic. A better understanding of the rules will make you a better coach
  • Watch upper division soccer games. Talk to coaches about what they do and why
  • Watch a few college or professional games
